Aesthetics of the Flickering Flame: Anxiety is a Prelude to Courage
Introduction: To You Facing the Cold Wave in Your Heart
Anxiety comes without warning. Looking at the ceiling before falling asleep, ahead of an important presentation, or suddenly my chest tightens without any reason. We want to chase this uninvited guest away quickly. We also blame ourselves for being anxious, calling ourselves “weak.” But what if anxiety is not actually bad? What if it is an indispensable signal in our lives? Today I want to clear the name of anxiety. Anxiety is not a disease. It is the most intense proof of aliveness that you are standing on the “threshold of growth.”
1. Origin of Anxiety: Duet of Survival and Possibility From evolutionary psychology, anxiety is an alarm system to protect us. Humans who did not feel anxiety at the rustling sound in the forest were eaten by beasts. In other words, feeling anxiety is proof that your brain is working normally and efficiently to protect you. However, modern anxiety connects to “possibility” beyond survival. Existential philosopher Kierkegaard said, “Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.” When standing at the edge of a cliff, you are scared of falling, but the dizziness you feel because of the possibility that you might fly. This is anxiety. In other words, anxiety is proof that we are standing before free choice.
2. Growing Pains: The Pain of Breaking the Shell Lobsters must shed their hard shells to grow. Immediately after shedding, lobsters are soft and vulnerable, exposed to predator attacks. At this time, the lobster will feel extreme anxiety and stress. But without this process, it cannot grow into a bigger lobster. We are the same. Anxiety inevitably comes when we leave the familiar Comfort Zone and move to a new area. Therefore, anxiety is not a signal to “Stop!” but a signal that “You are growing now.” If you feel anxiety, you are not stagnant but moving forward.
3. Attitude Toward Anxiety: Like a Surfer Riding the Waves We fall into deeper anxiety while trying to remove it. Anxiety is not an enemy to eliminate, but a companion to go with. If you run away because the waves are scary, you get swept away, but if you ride the waves, you can enjoy surfing. When anxiety comes, objectify it and look at it: “Ah, I am anxious again.” Do not reject it but accept it. Reinterpret it: “This anxiety is the flip side of my passion to do this job well.” When substituting anxiety with energy, it becomes a source of tremendous concentration and motivation.
4. One Must Shake to Bloom A flame cannot burn without flickering. Flowers strengthen their stems while shaking in the wind. Shaking (anxiety) is the essence of existence. A life that does not shake is only a dead life. The fact that you are shaking means your roots are struggling to go down deeper. So do not be ashamed of that shaking. The most beautiful dance is born within that shaking.
5. Conclusion: Anxious You Are a Courageous Person Courage is not the absence of fear, but the state of acting despite fear. You who live through today, challenge, and love while feeling anxiety are already a sufficiently courageous person. Your one step taken holding the trembling of anxiety is much greater than a step walked without any trembling. The day that trembling stops, you will know that the place you are standing is a much higher summit. Be anxious. And move forward.
