Choosing Who to Keep Beside You is Choosing Your Future: The Power of Connections That Help Growth

Introduction: Think of the Five People Around You

There is a saying, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This does not simply refer to economic levels or professional status. It means that our language, way of thinking, values, and perspective on looking at the world change gradually depending on who we spend time with.

Interpersonal relationships sometimes feel like a fate that I cannot choose. However, if you truly want to find yourself and grow, we must have the courage to actively choose ‘the people to keep beside you.’ Because that is the most powerful choice that determines my future.

1. Contagiousness of Relationships: Read Emotional Currents

We are exposed to numerous emotional currents while living. If we stay beside people who are always complaining and blaming others, we will soon throw sharp gazes toward the world ourselves. Conversely, if we stay beside people who are grateful for even small things in life and try to find meaning in difficulties, we will also live a more positive and resilient life.

This is not a matter of will but a neuroscientific phenomenon. Even a single word uttered by a person around us or an unconscious sigh seeps into our subconscious. Therefore, if you know what kind of future you want to live, you must first find people who are already living such a future or who have energy oriented toward such a life.

2. Solidarity of Growth Beyond Vertical Relationships

The ‘horizontal relationship’ emphasized by Adlerian psychology becomes a core criterion for wise relationship choice. Relationships that oppress me or force obedience, or relationships that I use to feel a sense of superiority, never bring growth.

A truly good connection is a relationship where they respect each other’s independence while being willing to support each other’s growth. People who support me without laughing when I take a new challenge, people who give me sharp advice when I go the wrong path but do not withdraw their trust. When such people are beside us, our future becomes a field of exploration that is no longer fearful.

3. Sometimes ‘Courage to Let Go’ is Necessary

To fill new water, you must empty the stagnant water. If it is a relationship that exhausts me, eats away my self-esteem, and keeps me staying in the scars of the past, you must know how to keep a distance no matter how old the connection is.

This is not because you hate the other person, but an inevitable process for your own growth. Holding onto a relationship that destroys me in the name of ‘old ties’ may be an act of evading responsibility for the future. Only when an empty space is created can new energy that will enrich me more come into that place.

4. How to Form Wise Connections

  • Check Consistency of Values: Find people whose values they value importantly in life are similar, rather than simply having the same hobbies.
  • Observe Actions and Atmosphere Rather Than Words: Observe how that person treats others or their usual living habits. That may soon become your appearance.
  • Becoming a Good Person First: People with high energy recognize good energy. When I first grow and start to shine, such connections will be attracted like a magnet.

Conclusion: Your Future is Beside You Right Now

The conversations you handed today, the jokes you laughed together, and the worries you shared together become a huge fabric and are weaving the clothes of your future. Look around you now. Do they resemble the appearance of the future you dream of?

Who to keep beside you is one of the greatest sovereignties given to us. Do not be afraid to exercise that sovereignty. When you fill your surroundings with people who truly rejoice in your growth, your future will be much more beautiful and radiant than you imagined.

I pray that precious connections that recognize your value and help your growth be full in your life today.
