Chronotypes: The Optimal Rhythm Your Biological Clock Tells You
Chronotypes: Which Animal’s Rhythm are You Living By?
The world emphasizes ‘Miracle Morning’ to us and says that waking up early is the key to success. However, while 6 AM is a time when ideas gush for some, for others it is a time of torture where the brain is still asleep.
Whether we are morning types or evening types is not just a matter of willpower. It depends on your genetically determined ‘Chronotype,’ or the type of your biological clock. Find your rhythm through the four animal types classified by clinical psychologist Dr. Michael Breus.
I. Characteristics of the Four Chronotypes
- The Lion: Typical morning type.
- Rhythm: Energy peaks at dawn and gradually loses power after noon.
- Characteristics: Strategic and values discipline. Advantageous for beginning work early, but terrible for late-night social gatherings.
- The Bear: The most standard type, accounting for about 50% of the population.
- Rhythm: Energy flows according to the altitude of the sun. Most productive from mid-morning to early afternoon.
- Characteristics: Social and requires sufficient sleep (8 hours or more). They are also the type that most commonly suffers from ‘Monday blues.’
- The Wolf: Typical evening type.
- Rhythm: Dazed in the morning, creative energy explodes after 7 PM or late at night.
- Characteristics: Frequently found among artists or developers. The type that suffers most in the morning-centered social system.
- The Dolphin: Sensitive type with a tendency toward insomnia.
- Rhythm: Light sleepers with low sleep quality. Reaches an alert state only in the afternoon.
- Characteristics: Intellectual with a strong perfectionist streak, and tends to have sensitive nerves.
II. Optimizing Your Daily Schedule Based on Your Biological Clock
By knowing your chronotype, you can maximize efficiency by adjusting not just sleep time but also work, exercise, and even meal times.
- If you are a Lion, handle your most important work between 6 AM and 10 AM.
- If you are a Bear, do the most difficult work between 10 AM and 2 PM.
- If you are a Wolf, arrange important meetings or creative work as late in the afternoon as possible.
- If you are a Dolphin, reducing brain tension through deep breathing and meditation is the key to productivity.
III. Overcoming Social Jetlag
The conflict between your innate rhythm and social demands (such as a 9-to-6 workday) is called ‘Social Jetlag.’ If a Wolf-type person forcibly lives like a Lion-type, they will suffer from chronic fatigue and declining health.
The best solution is to find an environment that respects your rhythm, but if that is impossible, utilize sunlight. Bright morning sunlight suppresses melatonin secretion, helping to advance the biological clock even if by force. Conversely, blue light from smartphones in the evening awakens the Wolf-type brain more and causes sleep disorders, so it must be avoided.
Conclusion: Respect Your Genes
Do not blindly follow the morning habits of successful people. Your brain and body are being played according to your unique musical score.
Instead of blaming yourself for being lazy, find the time when your biological clock shines brightest and guard that time. The moment you reconcile with your rhythm, you will gain both explosive immersion and tranquility that you have never experienced before.
