Confucianism: The Geometry of Human Relationships

1. Introduction: Ren and Li

Confucius lived in a time of chaos (Warring States). He asked: “How do we stop people from killing each other?” His answer was not “Law” or “God.” It was Ritual (Li) and Benevolence (Ren). If everyone plays their role perfectly, society works like a symphony.

2. The Five Relationships (Oryun)

Society is built on 5 bonds:

  1. Ruler - Subject: Loyalty.
  2. Father - Son: Filial Piety (Hyo).
  3. Husband - Wife: Distinction/Harmony.
  4. Older Brother - Younger Brother: Order.
  5. Friend - Friend: Trust.

Notice 4 of the 5 are Hierarchical. Westerners value Equality. Confucians value Order. To a Confucian, “Equality” looks like chaos. A younger brother should respect the older. The older must care for the younger. It is a reciprocal contract.

3. Filial Piety (Hyo): The Root

The family is the prototype of the state. If you cannot respect your father, you cannot respect the King. Hyo is absolute. It is gratitude for the gift of life. But it can become toxic. In modern Korea, “Hyo” is often used to manipulate children (“I sacrificed everything for you, so you must become a doctor”). True Confucianism requires the parent to be worthy of respect (Benevolent).

4. The Junzi (The Gentleman)

The goal of life is to become a Junzi (Exemplary Person). A Junzi is calm, knowledgeable, and morally upright. He does the right thing not because of fear of Hell, but because of Shame. In the West, “Guilt” (Internal) regulates behavior. In the East, “Shame” (Social) regulates behavior. “What will the neighbors think?” is a Confucian question.

5. Conclusion: Rite serves Right

We often dismiss rituals as “empty formalities.” Confucius argued that the ritual creates the feeling. We bow not because we feel respect, but to learn respect. We dress up for a funeral to signal gravity. “Ritual is the container that holds the chaos of emotion.” Without the container, the water spills.
