Chapter 5: The Article System — A, An, and The

Articles are tiny words with enormous power. Choosing the wrong article — or omitting one — immediately marks a speaker as non-native. This chapter demystifies the English article system once and for all.

Indefinite Articles: A and An

Use a or an when:

  • The noun is countable and singular
  • You are mentioning it for the first time or it is non-specific
RuleExample
Use a before consonant soundsa cat, a university (note: /juː/ sound)
Use an before vowel soundsan apple, an honest man (note: silent h)

The choice between a and an depends on sound, not spelling.

  • a university (starts with /j/ sound)
  • an hour (silent h, starts with /aʊ/ sound)

Definite Article: The

Use the when:

  • The noun has already been mentioned (second reference)
  • Both speaker and listener know exactly which one
  • The noun is unique (the sun, the president, the Eiffel Tower)
  • With superlatives: the best, the most expensive
  • With ordinals: the first, the second

Zero Article

No article is used with:

  • Plural countable nouns in general statements: Cats are independent animals.
  • Uncountable nouns in general statements: Water is essential for life.
  • Proper nouns (most names of people, countries, cities): She lives in France.
  • Meals, sports, languages (generally): I play tennis. She speaks French.

Article Decision Table

SituationArticleExample
First mention, singular countablea/anI saw a dog.
Second mentiontheThe dog was friendly.
Unique referencetheThe moon is bright tonight.
General pluralzeroDogs are loyal.

Common Errors for Non-Native Speakers

  1. Using the with general plurals: ❌ The dogs are loyal animals. → ✅ Dogs are loyal animals.
  2. Missing article with singular countable: ❌ She is teacher. → ✅ She is a teacher.
  3. Using the with country names (mostly): ❌ I live in the Japan. → ✅ I live in Japan. (exceptions: the USA, the UK, the Netherlands)

Key Checklist

  • I understand when to use a, an, the, or no article (zero article).
  • I can distinguish between vowel sounds and vowel letters to choose a vs. an.
  • I know common exceptions like country names that use the.
