Chapter 6: Prepositions — In, On, At and Beyond
Prepositions are the glue of English sentences, linking nouns to the rest of the clause. Mastering in, on, and at — along with movement prepositions — is essential for natural fluency.
Prepositions of Time
| Preposition | Use | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| at | Specific times, holidays | at 3 pm, at midnight, at Christmas |
| on | Days and dates | on Monday, on March 15, on my birthday |
| in | Months, years, seasons, longer periods | in March, in 2020, in winter, in the morning |
Memory trick: Think of containers. in = largest container (month, year), on = flat surface (day), at = a point (specific time).
Prepositions of Place
| Preposition | Use | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| at | A specific point or location | at the bus stop, at work, at home |
| on | A surface or line | on the table, on the wall, on the road |
| in | Inside an enclosed space | in the box, in the city, in the car |
Prepositions of Direction and Movement
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| to | destination | She went to school. |
| into | movement inside | He walked into the room. |
| onto | movement onto a surface | The cat jumped onto the bed. |
| from | starting point | I came from Paris. |
| toward(s) | in the direction of | She walked toward the exit. |
| through | from one side to another | We drove through the tunnel. |
Common Preposition Collocations
Some prepositions are fixed with certain words and must be memorized:

Common Errors

- On vs. in for vehicles: in a car/taxi but on a bus/train/plane
- Missing preposition with “home”: ❌ She went to home → ✅ She went home (no preposition needed)
