The abuser denies reality. “You are crazy.” “You are too sensitive.” Over time, the victim loses trust in their own perception and relies entirely on the abuser’s version of reality.
Origin
From the 1938 play Gas Light, where a husband dims the gas lights but tells his wife she is imagining it.
