The Wisdom of Heavenly Stems: The Ten Cosmic Elements

Among the eight characters of the Four Pillars of Destiny, the four characters located at the top are called ‘Heavenly Stems (天干)’. While the Earthly Branches (地支) represent the realistic ground and environment we step on, the Heavenly Stems mean the spiritual archetypes we aim for, our pure will, and the first impression shown to others.

Each of the ten Heavenly Stems has its own unique vital force. Focusing on your ‘Day Master (the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born),’ see how these elements communicate within you.

1. Wood (木): The Will to Grow

  • Gap-Wood (甲木, Yang Wood): A towering large tree. It signifies driving force, leadership, and unbending integrity. Excellent at starting or pioneering new projects.
  • Eul-Wood (乙木, Yin Wood): A soft vine or flower. It symbolizes flexibility, adaptability, and persistent vital force. Possesses the wisdom to achieve goals by utilizing the surrounding environment.

2. Fire (火): The Energy of Diffusion

  • Byeong-Fire (丙火, Yang Fire): The Sun. It signifies undisguised honesty, wide-ranging influence, and passion. Has a strong public energy that illuminates and brightens all things.
  • Jeong-Fire (丁火, Yin Fire): A lamp or candle flame. It symbolizes focused heat, dedication, and artistic sensitivity. Has the power to quietly but substantially warm the surroundings.

3. Earth (土): Mediation and Inclusion

  • Mu-Earth (戊土, Yang Earth): A massive mountain. It signifies unshakeable stability, trust, and inclusiveness. A reliable character who knows how to embrace many things and wait.
  • Gi-Earth (己土, Yin Earth): Fertile farmland. It symbolizes productivity, practicality, and meticulous care. Excellent talent for educating or nurturing others.

4. Metal (金): Decisiveness and Fruition

  • Gyeong-Metal (庚金, Yang Metal): Unrefined ore or a sword. It signifies decisiveness, a sense of justice, and cold judgment. Has the power to clearly distinguish right from wrong and reform.
  • Shin-Metal (辛金, Yin Metal): A polished jewel or a precise tool. It symbolizes delicacy, completion, and sharp critical power. Exceptional ability to refine oneself and increase value.

5. Water (水): Insight and Wisdom

  • Im-Water (壬水, Yang Water): A vast river or ocean. It signifies deep wisdom, flexible thinking, and strong condensation. Has an inclusive leadership that accepts everything and makes it flow.
  • Gye-Water (癸水, Yin Water): Dew or raindrops. It symbolizes intuition, detailed sensitivity, and intellectual curiosity. Possesses the wisdom to seep into unseen places and lead change.

Conclusion: What color is your sky?

Saju is a drama of these ten Heavenly Stems. Some may be born with the driving force of Gap-Wood but may not be able to sprout because the environment (Earthly Branches) is too cold. Some may have the wisdom of Im-Water but may be unable to make their thoughts known because the light of Byeong-Fire is lacking.

Understanding your Heavenly Stems means knowing what your pure intention is. Even within the constraints of reality, try following the direction pointed out by these ‘stars in the sky’ that always float in your mind. Your life’s true North Star is there.
