Home is a Stage for Life That You Can Cultivate for Happiness: Comfort and Power from Space
Introduction: What Expression is Your House Making?
A place to return to after the day is over, a space to return to ‘me’ away from all the noise of the world. We call it ‘home.’ However, for many people, home is often considered merely a residence for sleeping or one of the items on a property list for eventual resale.
One of the important values Adlerian psychology teaches us is that even our environment is a result of our choice. A house is not just a box made of walls and a ceiling, but a stage for life where my inner self is projected. Today, we want to talk about how how we decorate and cultivate this stage affects our happiness.
1. A Space That Welcomes Me, A Space That Restores Me
The most essential function of a home is ‘recovery.’ It must be the only place where a heart wounded by cold social evaluation and competition can return and be disarmed.
Making a house that welcomes me is not about grand interior design. A subtle scent that greets me when I open the front door, a cushion in a color I like, and a comfortable chair to melt away the day’s fatigue are enough. The sense that the space is welcoming me raises self-esteem and recharges the courage to go out into the world again.
2. Organizing: A Ritual for Inner Order
When your mind is cluttered, look around your room. Chances are high that the room is also in a mess. A space overflowing with things and lacking order gives constant visual stress to our brains.
Organizing is not just the act of clearing things away, but a philosophical act of discerning what is precious and what is unnecessary in my life. Once unnecessary things are emptied, the precious values I truly cherish finally begin to come into view. A cleanly organized space establishes inner order and makes complex thoughts simple.
3. Home is the Most Honest Mirror That Expresses Me
A home is not a showroom to show others. It is a place that must thoroughly contain my tastes and values.
A study filled with books I love, carefully cultivated pots, or a board recording my dreams. Plant your traces (artifacts) throughout the space. When we are surrounded by things we like, we finally feel a strong sense of existence, “I am this kind of person.” Cultivating a space is like the process of writing the story of the person that is ‘me.‘
4. Switching the Stage of Happiness with Small Changes
You don’t need to completely overhaul your house for happiness. Small changes can change the overall atmosphere and your mood.
- Changing Light Temperature: Try turning on warm orange light after work. It activates the parasympathetic nerves and helps deep rest.
- Keeping Living Things: Even a small pot is fine. Watching life grow is a great way to feel social interest and connection.
- Creating Your Own ‘Sanctuary’: Even if it’s not the whole house, designate a small corner only for yourself. A magical space where just sitting there makes you feel peaceful.
Conclusion: Become the Protagonist on the Stage Called Home
In the play of your life, home is your exclusive stage where you can handle roles most comfortably. Just as an actor cannot focus on acting if the stage is a mess, your life can easily lose its way if your home is neglected.
Starting today, try cultivating your home with care. A small touch to put an item in its place, a cup of tea under the sunlight seeping through the window. Those trivial moments will gather to build the solid castle of your happiness.
I support your space hugging you warmly and your happiness growing day by day within it.
