Lucid Dreaming and Astral Projection: Consciousness That Never Sleeps

Every night we think we lose consciousness as we fall asleep. However, some people remain awake even within their dreams. This is called Lucid Dreaming. Taking this a step further, the phenomenon where consciousness feels like it leaves the boundaries of the physical body and moves through space is called Astral Projection or Out-of-Body Experience (OBE).

Once considered the realm of mysticism, these phenomena have now become important subjects of study in modern neuroscience and psychology.

I. Lucid Dreaming: Virtual Reality in the Brain

Lucid dreaming is the state of realizing “Ah, this is a dream!” while dreaming. Neuroscientifically, this is a unique state where the Prefrontal Cortex, which is normally active when awake, reawakens during REM sleep, the stage of sleep responsible for dreaming.

  • Possibilities: In a lucid dream state, amazing experiences are possible, such as changing the dream’s background, flying, or conversing with inner archetypes. This becomes a powerful tool for gaining creative ideas or overcoming fears (nightmares).
  • Practice (Reality Check): Develop the habit of frequently asking yourself “Is this a dream?” while awake, bending your fingers, or looking at a watch. When this habit appears in a dream, awareness finally begins.

II. Astral Projection: Non-locality of Consciousness

Astral projection is an experience where one’s consciousness is ‘projected’ outside the physical body to observe surroundings or distant places. Many people experience this during near-death experiences or extreme meditation.

  • Scientific Interpretation: The Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ) of the brain integrates information about our body’s position and our sense of self. There is a hypothesis that when this area receives electrical stimulation or experiences temporary functional confusion, the brain creates the illusion that consciousness is outside the body or actually receives multi-dimensional information.
  • Psychological Meaning: Astral projection gives a powerful subjective certainty that humans are not merely physical beings. This serves as an opportunity to reduce the fear of death and broaden the fundamental understanding of existence.

III. Advice for Safe Exploration

Consciousness exploration is exciting, but caution is required.

  1. Grounding in Reality: One should not neglect the duties of the real world by becoming too immersed in the world of consciousness. High flight is only possible with clear grounding.
  2. Managing Fear: Bizarre phenomena encountered during dreams or astral projection are mostly projections of one’s own unconscious. An attitude of wanting to observe rather than fear them is important.
  3. The Power of Recording: Keeping a dream journal is the best way to build the muscles of consciousness.

Conclusion: Your Universe is Inside Your Head

The universe is not just outside of us. Our brains and consciousness are sophisticated spaceships capable of traveling through infinite multi-dimensional spaces. Lucid dreaming and astral projection are the processes of learning how to pilot that spaceship.

Tonight, as you lie in bed, try to maintain the thread of consciousness thin and long. The moment the veil of sleep is lifted, you may face a vast world of light that you have never seen in your life.
