In Lak’ech: The Universe Standing in Front of a Mirror

Ancient Mayans greeted each other with “In Lak’ech.” This phrase does not simply mean “Hello.” Its deep inner meaning is this:

“I am another yourself.”

And the other person would reply “A LA K’IN,” meaning “You are another myself.” Contained within this short greeting is a marvelous cosmic truth that modern physics and psychology are only belatedly discovering.

I. A Greeting That Breaks the Illusion of Separation

We often believe that “I” and “you” are clearly separated independent entities. However, from the Mayan perspective, we are merely fragments of a single vast organism divided into trillions of pieces, experiencing each other.

  • If I hurt you, I am ultimately hurting myself.
  • If I love and respect you, I am praising my own divinity.

This is not a moral lecture. It is acknowledging the physical reality that all things are connected by energy.

II. Relationships are My Mirror

The philosophy of In Lak’ech radically changes our human relationships.

  1. Understanding Projections: If I am uniquely angry at someone, there is a high probability that their behavior is actually a shadow of mine suppressed within me. They are a mirror of ‘another self’ that appeared to show an aspect of me I hadn’t seen.
  2. Maximizing Empathy: When regarding the other not as an ‘other’ but as oneself, suffering is no longer a spectacle. True healing begins when I discover my own tears within their tears.

III. Modern Society and In Lak’ech

We are living in an era that is historically the most connected (via social media) yet the most lonely. The greeting of In Lak’ech poses the following questions:

  • Did you see the ‘other self’ behind the eyes of the person you met today?
  • Do you feel the forest, the animals, and the vast ecosystem named Earth as ‘my extended body’?

Conclusion: We are Strongest When Connected

Remember In Lak’ech. When we taboo and compete with each other, we become weak, but when we acknowledge each other’s existence as a part of ourselves, we possess the power of the entire universe.

Try quietly reciting in your mind to a person passing by you today, or to your own reflection in the mirror: “In Lak’ech. I am another yourself.” The moment this short sentence touches your heart, the cold world will transform into a marvelous ocean of connection. You are never alone; the entire universe is breathing with you.
