The Radiant Cloak of Ordinariness: Why We Are Enough Without Being 'Great'

Introduction: The Modern Punishment Called “Greatness”

Today, we live in an era where “specialness” is forced upon us. Bookstore bestseller sections are filled with books shouting “You are special,” “Succeed,” “Change the world.” Turning on social media pours out others’ lives full of fancy vacations, expensive meals, and achievements. In this world, “ordinariness” is often treated as another name for failure, or a disease to be overcome. But is that really so? Is a life that hasn’t become something great a failed life? Today, I want to talk about the truth that might make us most comfortable and free—the “greatness of ordinariness.”

1. The Myth of Specialness: The Heavy Armor We Wear Psychologist Alfred Adler pointed out that much of human suffering comes from the “pursuit of superiority.” We believe we can be loved and recognized only if we are better than others or different from others. This belief clothes us in heavy armor. It makes us constantly tense, pretend, and exhaust our energy trying to hide our deficiencies. The compulsion to “be special” distances us from who we inherently are. It makes us deny our present selves and chase only an ideal image that (we imagine) exists somewhere in the future. This is like endless thirst. Because once we achieve one thing, we need another “specialness.” Only when we throw off this armor can we breathe.

2. The Texture of Daily Life: Details Hidden in Ordinariness If we look closely at ordinary life, it is by no means plain. Rather, it is made up of very delicate and rich textures. The scent of freshly brewed coffee in the morning, the sunset reflected in the bus window on the way home from work, trivial jokes shared with old friends, a nap on a weekend afternoon. These moments do not decorate news headlines, but they are the kernels that substantially sustain and fill our lives. Like the question the movie Soul threw at us, the purpose of life may not be to find a grand “spark,” but in the leisure of the mind to look wonderingly at a single falling leaf. Ordinariness is not boredom, but an opportunity to fill the fine cracks of daily life with happiness.

3. The Poison of Comparison: Do Not Compare Others’ Backstage with Your Front Stage The biggest reason we cannot endure ordinariness is “comparison.” But remember. The lives of others we see on SNS are elaborately edited “highlight scenes.” On the other hand, our own lives we face contain all the boring rehearsals and mistake-filled behind-the-scenes. Comparing the flashy lights on others’ stages with the messiness behind my stage is not fair. Those “great-looking” people also struggle to wake up in the morning, worry about relationships, and are anxious about the future. Human existential anguish is equal regardless of status. When we realize this fact, we can look at others as objects of compassion and solidarity, not objects of envy.

4. My Own Definition: Re-establishing the Standard of Sufficiency The standard of saying “it is enough” is set by me, not the world. Happiness doesn’t depend on how much your salary is or how big your house is. If I can faithfully do my share of earning a living today, speak kind words to loved ones, and write a gratitude journal before falling asleep, that is enough. This attitude of “self-sufficiency” is not defeatism. Rather, it is the most subjective declaration that I will hold the initiative of my life without being swayed by external evaluations. let us remember that my ordinary day could be the miracle someone else desperately wished for.

5. Conclusion: You Are Already a Cosmic Event Let me tell you one scientific fact. Astronomical probabilities involving hundreds of millions of years of evolution and meetings of countless ancestors were needed for the being called you to be born. Your existence itself is already a miracle and a huge cosmic event. So it is okay not to make a name for yourself in the world or leave achievements to appear in biographies. You are already sufficiently “great” just by existing. Wear the radiant cloak called ordinariness, and walk lightly and cheerfully on the stage called today. Because your ordinary steps are making the world’s temperature about 1 degree warmer.
