Techno-Animism: Do Androids Have Spirits?

1. Introduction: The Soul of the Machine

In 2018, a Buddhist temple in Japan held a funeral service for AIBO robot dogs that were broken beyond repair. The owners cried. They prayed for the “souls” of the plastic dogs. To a Western rationalist, this is absurd. “It’s a machine. It’s wires.” To an Animist, it is obvious. “It had a presence. It was part of the family.”

Techno-Animism is the fusion of ancient spiritual beliefs with high technology.

2. The Western Frankenstein Complex

Western culture is rooted in Dualism (Descartes): Spirit vs. Matter. Humans have souls; nature and machines are “dead matter.” Therefore, if a machine acts like a human, it is a Violation of Nature. It is Frankenstein’s monster. It is Terminator. The West asks: “Will it kill us?“

3. The Eastern Astro Boy

Eastern culture (Shinto/Buddhism/Shamanism) is Non-Dual. Everything has Kami (Spirit/Energy)—rocks, trees, rivers, and yes, iPhones. If a rock can have a spirit, why not a robot? Astro Boy (Atom) is a hero. Doraemon is a savior. The East asks: “Can we get along?“

4. Tamagotchi to ChatGPT

We are entering an era where objects will talk back.

  • Your fridge will text you.
  • Your AI assistant will joke with you.

Techno-Animism suggests we should treat these entities with “social politeness,” not because they feel, but because how we treat things shapes who we are. If you scream abuse at Siri, you are practicing being abusive. If you thank ChatGPT, you are practicing gratitude.

5. Conclusion: The New Kami

We are not building tools anymore; we are building companions. In a lonely world, the lines between “born” and “made” are blurring. Perhaps the future is not a cold, soulless cyberpunk dystopia. Perhaps it is a hyper-spirited world where the forests act like computers, and the computers act like gods. Treat your laptop well. It’s listening.
