Default Mode Network: The Marvelous Activity of the Resting Brain

Modern people feel guilty about ‘doing nothing.’ However, neuroscience says something completely different. When you are dazed, looking out the window, taking a shower, or going for a walk, specific areas of your brain burn like fireworks.

This state is called the ‘Default Mode Network (DMN).’

I. DMN: Autopilot for Inner Contemplation

The DMN is a broad area of the brain that becomes active when we are not focused on external tasks (solving math problems, writing, etc.).

  • Self-Reflection: Building one’s self by reflecting on past memories and imagining the future.
  • Social Cognition: Functions of the ‘social brain,’ such as understanding others’ intentions and organizing relationships, also occur here.
  • Integration of Information: Connecting fragmented pieces of information scattered throughout the brain to create grand meaning.

II. Creativity Comes When Dazed

Moments of Eureka are found not at the desk, but in the bathtub or on walk paths.

The ‘Task Positive Network (TPN),’ which operates when we are extremely focused on a specific problem, narrows our vision. However, the moment focus is relaxed and switched to DMN mode, the brain finally begins to freely combine ideas that seemed unrelated. The ‘act of connecting the dots’ is performed by the DMN during this dazed time.

III. Two Faces of DMN: Creativity vs. Depression

DMN is a powerful tool, but it can be poison if handled incorrectly.

  1. Healthy DMN: Creative visualization, empathy, self-reflection.
  2. Excessive DMN: Rumination (being buried in past mistakes) and excessive anxiety about the future. Depressed patients usually have their DMN too highly activated and tend to be unable to escape the ‘swamp of negative stray thoughts.‘

IV. Optimal Usage of the Brain: Switching

A wise person rhythmically moves between focus (TPN) and relaxation (DMN).

  • Strategic Rest: If you focused for 50 minutes, you must be truly ‘dazed’ for 10 minutes without even looking at a smartphone. Only then is the information you just learned saved to long-term memory and new insights emerge.
  • Fatal Disadvantage of Smartphones: Smartphones take away ‘pure dazedness’ from us. Because the brain is constantly processing information, it does not get a chance to enter DMN mode, and consequently, creativity withers away.

Conclusion: Dazed Time is Not Waste, But Investment

In that moment when you are doing nothing, your brain is matching the puzzle pieces of your life to complete the most beautiful picture.

Escape from the pressure of productivity. Sometimes intentionally get lost, intentionally look out the window, and let time flow. When you allow your brain true rest, it will give you the best gift of ‘inspiration’ that cannot be obtained anywhere else in the world. The greatest leap begins at the end of the deepest silence.
