Ch 13. SWOT Analysis: Building the Backbone of Strategy

When developing a business plan or setting the direction of an organization, SWOT analysis is almost always the first tool to reach for. It may look simple, but few frameworks are more powerful for simultaneously examining internal and external factors to decide “what needs to be done right now.”

1. The Four Components of SWOT

The 4 Elements of SWOT Analysis
ElementMeaningExamples
S (Strengths)Internal advantages your organization possessesProduct quality, skilled workforce, patents
W (Weaknesses)Internal limitations that need to be addressedLow brand awareness, limited distribution channels
O (Opportunities)Favorable external changes working in your favorMarket growth, regulatory easing, competitor weakness
T (Threats)Unfavorable external changes that pose a riskRising input costs, new market entrants

3. Beyond SWOT: The TOWS Strategy Matrix

SWOT should never stop at simply listing factors. The real value comes from combining each element to create concrete action plans.

  • SO Strategy (Strengths + Opportunities): An aggressive, offensive strategy that maximizes strengths to capture market opportunities.
  • ST Strategy (Strengths + Threats): Use your strengths to neutralize or avoid external threats.
  • WO Strategy (Weaknesses + Opportunities): A pivot strategy that shores up internal weaknesses so you can take advantage of opportunities.
  • WT Strategy (Weaknesses + Threats): A defensive or survival strategy that minimizes exposure to threats while addressing weaknesses.

Pro tip: Rather than filling every quadrant with a long list, distilling your analysis down to 3–5 critical items per quadrant is the secret to producing strategies you can actually execute.

Strategy is not a fixed outcome — it is a dynamic, ongoing process. Use SWOT analysis to claim a well-defined position in an ever-changing market.
