What Are Planets in Astrology?

In astrology, a planet symbolizes a specific energetic principle. Each planet represents a type of energy that defines “what is acting and how.”

Planets fall into two broad groups:

GroupPlanetsCharacteristics
Personal planetsSun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, MarsMove quickly; represent personal traits
Social/generational planetsJupiter, SaturnMid-speed; represent social patterns
Transpersonal planetsUranus, Neptune, PlutoMove slowly; represent generational influence

Personal Planets

☀️ Sun — The Core Self

Symbolizes: Ego, will, conscious identity, father Ruling sign: ♌ Leo Orbital period: 1 year (moves ~1° per day)

The Sun represents “Who am I?” The ‘zodiac sign’ most people know is the Sun sign.

The Sun’s position in the birth chart indicates:

  • The central purpose and direction of life
  • Conscious self-identity
  • Relationship with father and authority figures

Strong Sun: Confidence, leadership, powerful self-expression Challenged Sun: Work on self-worth; may depend on others’ approval

🌙 Moon — Emotions and the Unconscious

Symbolizes: Emotions, unconscious, mother, habits, instinct Ruling sign: ♋ Cancer Orbital period: 27.3 days (moves ~13° per day)

The Moon represents “How do I feel?” The Moon sign reveals emotional response patterns and unconscious instincts.

The importance of the Moon sign: Many people behave more like their Moon sign in daily life than their Sun sign. How you act in a comfortable setting and your emotional reactions follow your Moon sign.

☿ Mercury — Communication and Thought

Symbolizes: Thinking style, communication, language, learning, movement Ruling signs: ♊ Gemini, ♍ Virgo Orbital period: 88 days

Mercury represents “How do I think and communicate?”

Why Mercury retrograde gets attention: When Mercury is retrograde, communication errors, technology issues, and contract problems are said to arise.

♀ Venus — Love and Beauty

Symbolizes: Love, beauty, relationships, values, pleasure Ruling signs: ♉ Taurus, ♎ Libra Orbital period: 225 days

Venus represents “What do I love and how do I form relationships?”

Venus’s role in romance:

  • What type of partner you’re attracted to
  • How you express and receive love in relationships
  • What you find beautiful

♂ Mars — Action and Desire

Symbolizes: Drive, desire, passion, competition, anger Ruling sign: ♈ Aries (co-ruler: ♏ Scorpio) Orbital period: 687 days

Mars represents “How do I act and what do I desire?”

Mars in romance: Physical attraction, sexual energy, how you pursue in a relationship

Social Planets

♃ Jupiter — Expansion and Luck

Symbolizes: Expansion, luck, philosophy, education, optimism Ruling sign: ♐ Sagittarius (co-ruler: ♓ Pisces) Orbital period: 12 years (~1 year per sign)

Jupiter represents “Where do I grow and encounter good fortune?”

The sign and house where Jupiter is located marks the area of life where expansion flows most easily.

♄ Saturn — Structure and Discipline

Symbolizes: Limitation, responsibility, structure, discipline, time Ruling sign: ♑ Capricorn (co-ruler: ♒ Aquarius) Orbital period: 29.5 years

Saturn represents “Where am I tested and where do I grow?”

The Saturn Return at ages 29–30: The period when Saturn returns to its natal position. It symbolizes a restructuring of life and entry into true adulthood.

Saturn’s paradox: Saturn may seem to bring hardship, but the deepest growth happens in that very area. Those who overcome Saturn’s challenges become masters of that domain.

Transpersonal Planets

♅ Uranus — Innovation and Freedom

Symbolizes: Revolution, originality, freedom, change, technology Ruling sign: ♒ Aquarius Orbital period: 84 years (~7 years per sign)

Uranus is a generational planet. People born in the same era share the same Uranus sign. It symbolizes social revolution and generational change.

♆ Neptune — Spirituality and Dissolution

Symbolizes: Spirituality, illusion, art, compassion, dissolution Ruling sign: ♓ Pisces Orbital period: 165 years (~14 years per sign)

Neptune is the energy of dissolving boundaries and reaching toward transcendence. It symbolizes spirituality, art, and fantasy — and at times, confusion and deception.

♇ Pluto — Transformation and Regeneration

Symbolizes: Destruction and rebirth, power, depth, transformation Ruling sign: ♏ Scorpio Orbital period: 248 years (~12–30 years per sign)

Pluto carries the most powerful transformational energy. Where Pluto passes, complete breakdown and regeneration occur.

Planetary Strength: The Dignity System

Each planet operates with greater or lesser strength depending on which sign it occupies.

StateMeaningExample
DomicileIn its ruling sign; strongestSun in Leo
ExaltationExpresses at its most powerfulSun in Aries
DetrimentIn the opposite of its ruling sign; weakenedSun in Aquarius
FallOpposite of exaltation; weakestSun in Libra

Planetary strength requires synthesizing: which sign it’s in + aspects (angular relationships) + house position. Being in domicile is not automatically ideal.
