What Is a House?

A house represents a specific domain of life. If a planet says ‘what’ and a sign says ‘how,’ a house answers ‘where’ that energy operates.

Houses are determined by birth time and place. They begin at the Ascendant (Rising Sign) and extend counterclockwise through all 12 positions.

The Ascendant (Rising Sign)

The Ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It marks the beginning of the 1st House and is one of the most important points in the birth chart.

ElementSymbolizes
Sun signInner essence, conscious self
AscendantExternal impression, first appearance, interface with the world
Moon signEmotional response, the unconscious

People with the same Sun sign can give completely different impressions depending on their Ascendant.

The Ascendant changes every ~2 hours. People born on the same day but at dawn versus midday have entirely different Ascendants.
