What Is an Aspect?
An aspect is the angular relationship between two planets in a birth chart. When two planets form a specific angle, their energies “speak” to each other and interact.
Aspects fall into two broad categories:
- Harmonious aspects (conjunction, trine, sextile): Energy flows more easily
- Challenging aspects (square, opposition): Friction and tension — but also the engine of growth
Important: Challenging aspects are not inherently bad. They actually generate life’s tasks and the drive for growth. Many great individuals have powerful challenging aspects in their charts.
The 5 Major Aspects
☌ Conjunction — 0°
Orb (allowance): ±8° Energy: The two planets merge and concentrate powerfully.
The conjunction is the most powerful aspect. Two planetary energies fuse into one, making that domain extremely significant in life.

Orb: ±4° Energy: A gentle, helpful angle of opportunity.
The sextile represents potential opportunities. It is energy that can be utilized with effort. It requires a bit more conscious work than the trine.
△ Trine — 120°
Orb: ±8° Energy: A natural, free-flowing angle of talent.
The trine is the most harmonious aspect. It forms between signs of the same element and allows energy to flow naturally.
The trine’s trap: Because things come so easily, you may take that talent for granted and never develop it. Remember the paradox: “What’s easy can ironically be the hardest to use.”
□ Square — 90°
Orb: ±8° Energy: Friction, tension, challenge. The most powerful engine of growth.
The square creates tension as two planets pull against each other. It is difficult at first, but powerful abilities are developed in the process of resolving that tension.

Orb: ±8° Energy: Polarity and integration. Integrating opposing energies.
In an opposition, two energies stand at exact opposite sides. You must either discover your own shadow through others, or find balance between two competing desires.

Orb: The Allowance
An aspect doesn’t need to be exactly 0° (conjunction). It is valid as long as it falls within the orb (allowance).

The narrower the orb (within 2°), the stronger the influence of the aspect.

Aspect Patterns
When multiple planets form aspects together, special patterns emerge.
Grand Trine
Three planets each forming 120° (trine) to the others. Forms within the same element. A special talent and flow — but also the trap of complacency.
T-Square
Two planets in opposition (180°) with a third planet squaring (90°) both. Powerful tension and challenge; the focal point of energy is the planet at the T’s apex.
Grand Cross
Four planets each forming squares and oppositions to one another. Extremely intense tension. Those with this pattern carry great challenges — but can develop correspondingly great strength.
Stellium
Three or more planets gathered in the same sign or house. The energy of that sign/house dominates the entire chart.
Reading Your Chart: The Order of Aspect Interpretation
- Start with the Sun’s aspects (energies interacting with the ego)
- Identify the Moon’s aspects (energies influencing emotional patterns)
- Check major squares and oppositions (the primary life challenges)
- Check trines and sextiles (areas of talent and flow)
- Identify overall patterns (Grand Trine, T-Square, etc.)
