The Structure of Luck Cycles

In Four Pillars, luck (運) is the flow of energy that changes with time. If the natal chart is the foundation, luck cycles are the temporal energy overlaid upon it.

Life = Natal Chart (foundation) + Major Luck Cycle (10-year) + Annual Luck (1-year) + Monthly Luck (1-month)

When all three luck cycles are positive simultaneously, it is the peak of your life; when all are negative, it is the lowest point.

Major Luck Cycle (大運) Analysis

Calculating the Major Luck Cycle

The Major Luck Cycle progresses forward or backward from the Month Pillar.

Forward sequence (Yang males · Yin females):

  • Males born in a Yang year
  • Females born in a Yin year
  • Progresses in order from the next stem-branch after the Month Pillar

Reverse sequence (Yin males · Yang females):

  • Males born in a Yin year
  • Females born in a Yang year
  • Progresses in reverse order from the stem-branch before the Month Pillar

Calculating the start age:

Forward: Days from birth to the next solar term (節入) ÷ 3
Reverse: Days from birth back to the previous solar term ÷ 3
(Remaining days are rounded)

Example: Born in Gabia year, Gabin month; 24 days to the next solar term → 24 ÷ 3 = Major Luck Cycle begins at age 8 → Changes at ages 8, 18, 28, 38…

Sample Major Luck Cycle Sequence

For a forward Major Luck Cycle with Month Pillar Gabin (甲寅):

1st cycle: Eulbyo (乙卯)
2nd cycle: Byeongjin (丙辰)
3rd cycle: Jeongsa (丁巳)
4th cycle: Muo (戊午)

Core Principles of Major Luck Cycle Interpretation

Major Luck Cycle Stem: Psychological and interpersonal changes in the first 5 years Major Luck Cycle Branch: Environmental and material changes in the latter 5 years

Luck Cycle Ten GodMain ThemeActual Impact
Bijep cycleCompetition, independenceStarting a business, career change, restructuring relationships
Siksang cycleExpression, creationNew creative work, children, career changes
Jaeseong cycleWealth, realityIncreased income or sudden major expenses
Gwanseong cycleChallenges, growthChanges in social standing; watch health
Inseong cycleLearning, supportAcademic study, parental support, steady growth

Annual Luck (歲運) Analysis

What Is Annual Luck?

Annual Luck is determined by the stem-branch of that year. For example, 2026 is the year of Byeong-O (丙午年).

Byeong-Fire (丙) and O-Fire (午) of that year interact with everyone’s chart.

Annual Luck × Natal Chart Interaction

Combination (合) of the Annual Luck Stem and Day Master:

Gabgi combination (甲己合): If Gab-Wood Day Master has a Gi-Earth Annual Luck → Earth combination activates
Eulgyeong combination (乙庚合): Eul-Wood Day Master with Gyeong-Metal Annual Luck → Metal combination activates

When a combination forms, the energy of that element activates strongly.

Clash (沖) between Annual Luck Branch and Natal Chart Branch:

Ja (子) Annual Luck year + O (午) in natal chart → Ja-O clash activates
→ A year of relocation, career change, or major shift

Criteria for Judging Annual Luck

Characteristics of a favorable Annual Luck:

  1. Annual Luck element is your Lucky or Favorable Element
  2. Annual Luck combines harmoniously with Major Luck Cycle
  3. Annual Luck fills a vacancy (空亡) in the natal chart
  4. No or weak clashes, conflicts, or breaches

Annual Luck requiring caution:

  1. Annual Luck element is your Unfavorable or Harmful Element
  2. Annual Luck clashes with Major Luck Cycle
  3. A year when Conflicts (刑) activate
  4. Annual Luck clashes with an important character in the natal chart

Monthly Luck (月運) Analysis

What Is Monthly Luck?

Monthly Luck is the stem-branch of that month. It provides a more refined timing picture within the Annual Luck.

Timing important decisions:

  • Job offer / career change contracts: Lucky Element month
  • Investment / business decisions: When Jaeseong monthly luck is favorable
  • Marriage / starting cohabitation: Gwanseong or Jaeseong monthly luck
  • Starting a new project: Siksang or Bijep monthly luck

Monthly Fortune Intensity Table

Best: Major Luck Lucky Element + Annual Lucky Element + Monthly Lucky Element (triple favorable)
Good: 2 or more Lucky Elements overlapping
Average: Lucky and Unfavorable Elements mixed
Caution: Major Luck + Annual + Monthly all Unfavorable

Case Study: Comprehensive Major and Annual Luck Analysis

Hypothetical Case

Chart: Eul-Wood (乙木) Day Master, currently in Byeong-Fire (丙火) Major Luck Cycle Lucky Element: Water (strong Eul-Wood; needs to be controlled)

Major Luck Cycle Analysis (Byeong-Fire):

  • Byeong-Fire is Sikshin (食神) for Eul-Wood, draining Wood energy
  • A period of channeling Eul-Wood’s energy outward
  • Favorable for creative activity and entering society
  • However, Lucky Element is Water but Fire Luck Cycle → slightly unfavorable direction

2026 Annual Luck Analysis (Byeong-O year):

  • Annual Luck Byeong-Fire → Sikshin for the Eul-Wood Day Master
  • Annual Luck branch O-Fire (午) → adds additional Fire energy
  • Fire doubly reinforced → unfavorable for Lucky Element Water

Advice:

  • In 2026, be cautious of excessive activity and expenditure
  • Strengthen collaboration with friends/partners who have Water (水) energy
  • Focus important decisions in months when Water energy strengthens in the latter half of the year
