Introduction: What is Statistics?

Many think of statistics as just a collection of complex numbers. In reality, it is the Science of Decision Making. It helps us answer questions like “Does this new drug work?” or “Is our marketing strategy effective?“

1. Population vs. Sample

A Population includes every member of a group you want to study. A Sample is a smaller, manageable subset. Since we can’t always survey everyone, we use samples to infer the truth about the population.

2. Two Main Branches

• Descriptive Statistics: Summarizing and organizing data (e.g., Mean, Median).
• Inferential Statistics: Making predictions or generalizations about a population based on a sample.

3. The Power of Uncertainty

In the real world, nothing is 100% certain. Statistics gives us a way to quantify that uncertainty and make the best possible bet.

Statistics is like a flashlight in a dark room. It won’t show you the whole room instantly, but it can illuminate the part you’re walking on so you don’t trip over a “False Correlation.”
