What Is the GMAT?

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is the world’s leading assessment for business school admissions. Over 2,300 programs at universities worldwide accept GMAT scores, and it remains the preferred test for top MBA programs including Harvard Business School, Wharton, Stanford GSB, and INSEAD.

GMAT Focus Edition: Current Structure

The GMAT Focus Edition, introduced in 2023, is shorter and more focused than its predecessor.

GMAT vs. GRE for MBA Admissions

Most top MBA programs now accept both. Which should you choose?

Quant difficultyHigherModerate

MBA preferenceTraditional favoriteIncreasingly equal
Cost~$275~$220

Rule of thumb: If you’re strong in math and logical reasoning → GMAT. If vocabulary and reading are your strengths → GRE may suit you better.

The GMAT Adaptive Algorithm

GMAT Focus Edition uses computerized adaptive testing (CAT): each question’s difficulty adjusts based on your previous answers. Getting difficult questions right matters more than easy ones. This means:

  • Don’t rush early — accuracy on harder questions boosts your score more
  • Missing a question isn’t fatal; how you respond to the next determines the trajectory

Chapter 2 Preview

Next, we dive into Quantitative Reasoning — core math formulas, high-frequency problem types, and time-saving strategies for GMAT’s most calculation-intensive section.
