GMAT Score Is the Floor, Not the Ceiling
A 750 GMAT score won’t save a weak application. Conversely, compelling essays and a strong professional story can overcome a 680. The MBA application is a holistic evaluation: GMAT + GPA + Essays + Recommendations + Interview.
The Why MBA Framework
Every essay ultimately answers: “Why do you need an MBA — and why now?”
Career Narrative Structure:
- Past: What have you accomplished, and what skills have you built?
- Present: Why are you at a career inflection point?
- Future (short-term): Specific post-MBA role and industry (be concrete)
- Future (long-term): Broader impact/goal
- Why this school: Specifically how this program bridges your past to your future
School-Specific Essay Strategies
Harvard Business School (HBS)
- Essay: “As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy?” (900 words)
- Strategy: This open prompt is intentionally personal. HBS wants to know the person behind the resume — choose a theme or story that no other part of your application covers.
Wharton
- Essay 1: “How will you contribute to Wharton’s collaborative learning model?” (500 words)
- Strategy: Name specific Wharton resources: clusters, labs, particular professors, relevant clubs. Generic essays are a red flag.
Stanford GSB
- Essay 1: “What matters most to you, and why?” (650 words)
- The most introspective essay in MBA admissions. Don’t list accomplishments — explore your core values, formative experiences, and genuine motivations.
Letters of Recommendation
Who to Ask
- Direct supervisor who knows your work closely (ideal)
- Someone who can speak specifically to your impact (numbers, outcomes, leadership)
- Avoid: Famous names who don’t know you; skip the CEO if they can’t describe your daily contributions
How to Brief Your Recommenders
- Share your WHY MBA story and target schools
- Suggest 2–3 specific qualities you’d like emphasized
- Provide concrete examples (STAR format) they can draw from
- Give them at least 4–6 weeks lead time
MBA Interview Preparation
Common Questions & Frameworks
“Walk me through your resume” → Past → Present → Future (3-part narrative, 2–3 min)
“Why this school?” → Minimum 3 specific reasons (particular course, professor, club, employer relationship, cohort)
“Tell me about a failure” → Real failure + Genuine learning + Applied change
“Describe your leadership style” → STAR example: Situation, Task, Action (your specific decisions), Result
