The CAT Algorithm: How GMAT Scores You
GMAT uses Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT): each question’s difficulty adjusts based on your running performance. You’re not competing against other test-takers — you’re navigating a question pool calibrated to your ability level in real time.
Core CAT Principles
- Early questions matter more: The algorithm’s estimate of your ability is most uncertain early; accurate answers on initial questions create a more favorable trajectory
- Correct on hard questions > Correct on easy questions: Answering a difficult question correctly is worth more than answering an easy one
- Never leave questions blank: Unanswered questions (running out of time) carry a severe penalty
Section Pacing Guide
Quantitative Reasoning (21 questions / 45 min)

Handling Difficult Questions
The 2-Minute Rule
If you’re stuck after 2 minutes with no clear path forward:
- Make your best educated guess
- Move to the next question
- Don’t look back — trust your instinct and maintain pace
Elimination Strategy
On 5-choice questions, eliminating 2–3 clearly wrong choices improves guessing odds from 20% to 33–50%.
Smart Guessing by Question Type
- DS with complex algebra → guess if both conditions seem needed but relationship unclear
- RC detail questions → only worth returning to if you marked the paragraph
