SBR: The Pinnacle of the ACCA Qualification

SBR is one of two mandatory Strategic Professional papers and tests the application of advanced IFRS in complex, real-world scenarios. Long-form case-style questions replace the short exercises seen in Applied Skills.

IFRS 3: Business Combinations

Acquisition Method — the only permitted method under IFRS 3:

  1. Identify the acquirer
  2. Determine the acquisition date
  3. Measure consideration transferred
  4. Measure identifiable assets acquired and liabilities assumed at fair value
  5. Recognise goodwill (or bargain purchase gain)

Goodwill: Goodwill = Consideration + NCI − Fair value of net identifiable assets

Step acquisitions: Pre-existing interest is remeasured to fair value at acquisition date → difference goes to P&L.

Complex Group Structures

Vertical Groups

A → B → C (A controls B, B controls C)

A’s effective interest in C = A’s stake in B × B’s stake in C

Mixed Groups

A directly owns both a majority of B AND a minority of C; B also owns shares in C.

Foreign Currency Translation (IAS 21)

At Entity Level

  • Foreign currency transactions: Recorded at spot rate on transaction date
  • Monetary items: Retranslated at closing rate → exchange differences to P&L
  • Non-monetary items (at historical cost): Stay at original rate

Translating Foreign Operations

  • Assets and liabilities: Closing rate
  • Income and expenses: Average rate
  • Translation differences → Other Comprehensive Income (OCI)

Fair Value Measurement (IFRS 13)

Fair value = price received to sell an asset (or paid to transfer a liability) in an orderly transaction between market participants at measurement date

Three-Level Hierarchy

LevelInput TypeReliability
Level 1Quoted prices in active markets (identical asset)Highest
Level 2Observable market data (similar assets, adjusted)Medium
Level 3Unobservable inputs (entity’s own assumptions)Lowest

Professional Skills in SBR

SBR rewards not just technical accuracy but professional judgment:

ACCA Professional Skills:

  • Analysis and Evaluation
  • Commercial Acumen
  • Communication (clear, structured writing)
  • Professional Scepticism and Judgement

Marks are awarded for structure, clarity, and appropriate use of judgment — not just knowing the rule.

Chapter 8 Preview

The final chapter delivers a 20-question integrated mock exam spanning all ACCA subjects plus the qualification completion roadmap.
