Chapter 3 Overview: Everything Reflects Everything Else

Hwaeom thought is grounded in the Avatamsaka Sūtra (Flower Garland Sūtra). Its essence is compressed into a single line.

“The one contains the all, and the all is contained in the one.”

Demonstrating that this isn’t just a poetic slogan is the task Hwaeom thought sets for itself.

1. Dependent Origination — Everything Exists in Relationship

Hwaeom thought begins from Buddhism’s foundational principle, Dependent Origination (pratītyasamutpāda).

“When this exists, that exists; with the arising of this, that arises. When this does not exist, that does not exist; with the cessation of this, that ceases.”

In modern terms: nothing in the world exists independently. For a single flower to bloom, it needs a seed, soil, water, sunlight, air, a farmer’s care, clouds, and wind. A flower doesn’t exist on its own — it exists in relationship with the entire universe.

The same is true of “you.” Without the cells in your body, the food you’ve eaten, the parents who bore you, the language you learned, the society you belong to — none of these — there would be no “you” either.

2. Indra’s Net — A Net of Light

The most beautiful image in the Avatamsaka Sūtra is Indra’s Net.

“Above the palace of Indra hangs an infinite net of jewels. Each jewel is a shining bead, repeating without end. Each bead reflects every other bead, and within each reflected bead, yet another infinity of beads is reflected.”

In modern terms: this universe is like an infinite net of jewels. One jewel (one being) reflects every other jewel, and is reflected by every other jewel in turn. Change one, and the whole changes. The whole is contained within each single part.

3. The Unimpeded Interpenetration of Phenomena — Where Phenomenon Flows Freely Into Phenomenon

The pinnacle of Hwaeom thought is the unimpeded interpenetration of phenomena (sasa muae). Hwaeom describes the world in four stages.

4. What Hwaeom Thought Offers the Modern World

Ecological insight: climate change and biodiversity loss — these modern crises stem from humanity’s mistaken belief that we exist separate from nature. Hwaeom’s principle of Dependent Origination declares that humanity, too, is one bead in nature’s Indra’s net.

Relational insight: your existence already carries the traces of countless other beings. Your parents live within you; the books you’ve read live within you; the people you’ve met live within you.

5. A Beautiful Passage from the Avatamsaka Sūtra

“The whole universe is contained within a single speck of dust; endless ages are contained within a single moment.”

In modern terms: don’t dismiss the small. Cherish even the brief moment — eternity is present right now, in this instant.
