Statement of Purpose (SOP) Framework
The SOP is as important as your GRE score for competitive programs.
Paragraph 1 (Hook + Research Interest):
A specific moment, question, or experience that drew you to this field
Paragraphs 2–3 (Research/Experience Background):
Specific projects, publications, internships with concrete outcomes
Paragraph 4 (Research Plan):
Your specific research questions or direction for the program

Name specific faculty + lab + program resources that fit your plan

For graduate school (especially PhD programs):
- Faculty letters > Professional letters: A letter from a research supervisor who knows your intellectual abilities is gold
- Brief your recommenders on your research interests and target programs
- Request letters at least 6–8 weeks in advance
GRE Exam Day Tactics
Section Order
- AW → Verbal → Quantitative is the default order
- Place your weakest section last to preserve peak concentration for strong sections
Time Management
- Verbal: ~1.5 min/question
- Quant: ~1.75 min/question
- AWA: 5 min brainstorm + 22 min writing + 3 min review

The GRE’s ScoreSelect feature lets you choose which test dates’ scores to send:
- Most recent only

- Any specific test date
You may take the GRE up to 5 times in 12 months (no lifetime limit). Use ScoreSelect strategically: if your second attempt is significantly better, you don’t have to show the first.
