Using AI to Prep for Interviews — Company Research to Mock Interviews with ChatGPT and Claude

AI can be your interview coach

Eighty percent of interview prep is “understand the company + anticipate the questions + connect them to your own experience.” AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) can cut that repetitive work down dramatically. But it only drafts — the final answer still has to be filled in with your own experience.

AI output can contain factual errors (hallucinations). Always cross-check company details and figures against official job postings, the company website, and public filings.

Step 1 — Build a company and role analysis

Feed the AI the job posting and company information and ask it to analyze.

Example prompt:
"Analyze the job posting and company description below.
① The company's top 3 priorities, values, and the kind of person they hire
② What this role actually does day to day and what it requires
③ What the interviewers are likely to care about most
[paste job posting / company info]"

Fact-check the resulting summary against official sources before you build your prep on top of it.

Step 2 — Generate likely questions by interview type

Common interview types

  • General questions (why this role, strengths/weaknesses, career goals)
  • Behavioral (past examples used to verify competencies)
  • Situational (how you’d respond to a hypothetical)
  • Role/technical interviews

Example prompt

“Based on the role and values above, write 10 behavioral
questions and 5 situational questions. For each one,
note what it’s actually trying to assess.”

Step 3 — Turn your experience into structured answers

Let AI build the answer “frame,” but fill the content with your own experience.

STAR structure (for behavioral questions):
Situation → Task → Action → Result

Example prompt:
"Help me structure my experience using STAR. What I did:
[notes on my experience]. Connect it to
'competency X' for this role."

Step 4 — Run a mock interview (role play)

Example prompt:
"You are the interviewer at [company]. Go through the
questions above one at a time. After each of my answers,
give me ① what worked ② what to improve ③ a stronger example answer."

→ Answer out loud as if speaking, and repeat with the feedback.

Step 5 — Final checklist

□ Re-verify company/role facts against official sources
□ Make sure 3-4 core experiences can connect to almost any question
□ Prepare 2-3 questions to ask the interviewer
□ Cover the basics: first impression, attire, arriving on time

⚠️ Cautions

  • Never paste internal or confidential company information into AI (security)
  • Cross-check any “facts” AI gives you about the company (watch for hallucinations)
  • Answer in your own words — a memorized, copied-sounding answer is an instant red flag

Key takeaways

  1. Build a company/role analysis with AI, then fact-check it against official sources.
  2. Generate likely questions by interview type using AI.
  3. Frame answers with the STAR structure, filled in with your own experience.
  4. Use AI as a mock interviewer and iterate through feedback.
  5. Finish with a fact re-check, prepared questions, and the basics.
