Lost Cities in the Jungle

When 19th-century explorers hacked through the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala, they found something astonishing: massive stone pyramids, dozens of meters tall, wrapped in tree roots — the ruins of forgotten cities.

Maya civilization (c. 2000 BCE–1500s CE) flourished across modern Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. During the Classic Period (250–900 CE), dozens of city-states thrived with millions of inhabitants.


Mathematics: The Independent Invention of Zero

One of the Maya’s most remarkable achievements was the independent invention of zero.

Around the 4th century CE — roughly contemporaneous with India’s discovery — the Maya incorporated zero into their number system. While Europe was still using Roman numerals with no concept of a placeholder zero, the Maya were already using a fully positional numeral system.

Their base-20 (vigesimal) system used dots (1) and bars (5) to represent any number. The concept of zero as a number, not just a placeholder, is a profound mathematical insight.


Astronomy: Prophets of Venus

The precision of Maya astronomy is extraordinary.

Venus calculation: The Maya independently calculated Venus’s 584-day synodic cycle with an error of only 14 seconds over 50 years. This rivals modern computed values and required centuries of systematic naked-eye observation recorded and analyzed across generations of astronomers.

The Maya calendar system comprised two interlocking cycles:

  • Tzolkin: 260-day ritual calendar for divination and ceremonies
  • Haab: 365-day solar calendar for agriculture and administration

When the two cycles align, they produce a 52-year Calendar Round — the basic unit of Maya historical reckoning.


Tikal and Chichén Itzá

Tikal: Deep in the Guatemalan jungle, once home to hundreds of thousands of people. Pyramid temples rise 70 meters above the jungle canopy, still dominating the landscape.

Chichén Itzá: The Yucatán’s dominant city. The Pyramid of Kukulcán was designed so that on the spring and autumn equinoxes, the setting sun casts a serpentine shadow down the pyramid’s staircase — astronomical knowledge encoded in architecture.


The Classic Maya Collapse

In the 9th century, Classic Maya cities were abandoned with startling speed. Cities of hundreds of thousands of people emptied within decades. The reason remains disputed.

Competing theories: prolonged drought (supported by climate data), internal warfare and political fragmentation, environmental degradation (deforestation, soil depletion), and epidemic disease — most likely a combination of all.

Maya civilization didn’t vanish with the collapse. Spanish conquest brought massacres and cultural destruction, but today approximately 7 million Maya descendants live in Central America and Mexico, many still speaking Maya languages.


The Lost Books

Spanish conquistadors burned most Maya books (codices) as heathen documents. Only four Maya codices survive. The knowledge they contained — centuries of astronomical observation, ritual knowledge, history — is mostly lost forever.

Maya hieroglyphics were only substantially deciphered in the 20th century. Each newly read inscription reveals another piece of Maya history that was hidden in plain sight for centuries.
