Volleyball Rules Explained — Rally Scoring and Rotation in One Guide
Volleyball is easy once you know rally scoring
Volleyball is fast and intense, but its rules are clear-cut. You really just need to understand how scoring works, the 3-touch rule, and rotation.
The basics — players and sets
- Players: 6 per team on the court. (Beach volleyball uses 2.)
- Sets: Best of 5 sets — first to win 3 sets wins the match.
- Set score: First to 25 points, winning by a margin of at least 2. The deciding 5th set is played to 15.
- Rally scoring: whoever wins the rally scores the point, regardless of who served.
The key rule — 3 touches
A team may touch the ball up to 3 times before it must
cross back over the net.
- Typical sequence: receive (dig) → set (raise the ball) → spike (attack)
- The same player can’t touch the ball twice in a row (except when blocking)
- A block touch doesn’t count toward the 3-touch limit
Common faults
- Double contact: one player touches the ball twice in a row (e.g. during a set)
- Four hits: a team touches the ball 4 times
- Net touch: touching the net during play
- Reaching over: crossing into the opponent’s side to attack or interfere
- Foot fault / over the line: stepping on or over the line while serving
- Position fault: being out of the correct rotation order at the moment of serve
Rotation and positions
Rotation: winning back the serve moves every player one position clockwise.
Positions: 3 front-row players (attack, block) + 3 back-row players (defense, receive).
Back-row players may not jump and attack from in front of
the 3-meter attack line.
The Libero
- A defensive specialist (wears a different-colored jersey)
- Plays only in the back row — can receive and defend, but can never attack, block, or serve
- Can substitute in and out of the back row freely (no limit on the number of substitutions)
Position names
- Setter: runs the offense by setting the ball (the “quarterback”)
- Outside hitter (left side): the primary attacker
- Middle blocker (center): blocking and quick attacks
- Opposite (right side): back-row attacks, the “closer”
Key takeaways
- 6 players, rally scoring, sets go to 25 points (win by 2), first to 3 sets wins (the 5th set goes to 15).
- A team gets up to 3 touches before sending the ball back over (receive-set-spike).
- Double contacts, four hits, and net touches are all faults.
- Winning the serve back triggers a clockwise rotation; back-row players can’t jump-attack in front of the attack line.
- The libero is a defense-only specialist — no attacking or serving, but unlimited substitutions.
