Why Index ETFs?

For most individual investors, low-cost index ETFs are the optimal investment vehicle.

ETF advantages:

  • Instant diversification across hundreds or thousands of holdings
  • Ultra-low expense ratios (0.01–0.20%)
  • Traded like stocks (flexible)
  • No fund manager needed — track the market automatically

Index fund vs. active funds:

  • Over 20 years, less than 10% of active funds beat their benchmark after fees
  • High fees compound into dramatically lower wealth over time

Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)

DCA: Invest a fixed amount at regular intervals regardless of price.

Advantages:

  • Eliminates need to time the market
  • Automatically buys more shares when prices are low
  • Reduces emotional decision-making

Implementation:

  1. Set up automatic monthly contributions at your brokerage
  2. Invest right after each paycheck (automation removes willpower requirement)
  3. Maintain for minimum 3–5 years; ideal 10+ years
