Lesson 4 Overview: Not All Bullish Crosses Are Equal

With theory (wave, time, price) covered, we return to the lines. We’ll take the bullish/bearish crosses and cloud breakouts from the beginner series and read them one level deeper — by where they happen.

1. Re-mapping Each Line’s Role

LineTimeframeCharacter
Tenkan-sen (9)PresentShort-term balance and direction
Kijun-sen (26)PresentThe mid-term trend’s “spine”
Chikou Span26 periods backContrasts current strength against the past (confirmation)
Senkou Span A/B (Cloud)26 periods aheadFuture support/resistance

2. Grading Bullish and Bearish Crosses by Location

Even when the Tenkan-sen crosses above the Kijun-sen (a bullish cross), its reliability depends heavily on where it happens.

  • Strong bullish cross: occurs ABOVE the Cloud (with the trend)
  • Moderate bullish cross: occurs INSIDE the Cloud (direction unclear — wait)
  • Weak bullish cross: occurs BELOW the Cloud (a counter-trend bounce — be cautious)

A bearish cross (downward) is symmetric — a bearish cross below the Cloud is the strongest sell signal.

3. The Chikou Span — The Most Underrated Confirmation Line

The Chikou Span is nothing more than “today’s close, plotted 26 periods back” — but Ichimoku Sanjin treated it as critical.

  • Chikou Span breaks ABOVE the candle from 26 periods ago → bullish confirmation
  • Chikou Span drops BELOW the candle from 26 periods ago → bearish confirmation
  • Chikou Span gets “stuck” against a past candle and stalls → trend hesitation

4. Cloud Thickness and Twists, in Depth

  • A thick Cloud: strong support/resistance (a breakout needs a lot of energy)
  • A thin Cloud: weak support/resistance (easily passed through — watch for false breakouts)
  • A Cloud twist (Senkou Span A/B crossing): foreshadows a trend change 26 periods ahead → flag it as a future signal on your watchlist in advance

A zone where the Cloud thins out is a signal that a breakout may be approaching — watch it especially closely when it overlaps with a change day (Time Theory).

5. Reading the Lines Together

Ideal bullish alignment

  • price > Cloud / Tenkan-sen > Kijun-sen (rising) / Chikou Span > past candle → When all three line up, trend confidence is at its highest (next lesson: three-role reversal)

This Lesson’s Key Takeaways

  1. The Kijun-sen’s slope is the measure of a “real trend” — the Tenkan-sen alone isn’t enough.
  2. Bullish and bearish crosses are graded by where they occur (above/inside/below the Cloud).
  3. The Chikou Span’s “clear space breakout” past old candles is what completes a signal.
  4. Cloud thickness and twists reveal support/resistance strength and foreshadow future turns.
  5. Confidence is highest when the Tenkan-sen cross, Cloud position, Chikou Span, and Kijun-sen all agree.

Next lesson: We finish by combining the three-role reversal (Sanyaku Kouten) with the three theories into a full practical scenario — including how to combine it with other indicators and manage risk, wrapping up the advanced series.
