IELTS Listening Strategy
Listening Structure (30 min + 10 min transfer)

Predictive Listening
Use the pre-listening time (30 seconds) to:
- Identify question type (form fill, multiple choice, map, etc.)
- Underline keywords in questions (proper nouns, numbers, capitals)
- Predict what type of answer is needed (number, name, adjective, etc.)
During the audio:
- Write answers immediately as you hear them (answers appear in sequence)
- Mark uncertain answers; come back during transfer time
- Numbers and dates: write exactly what you hear — don’t round or interpret
Common Listening Traps

| Self-correction | ”No wait, it’s Tuesday, not Wednesday” → Tuesday is correct |
| Similar sounds | fifteen (15) vs. fifty (50) |
| Negation | ”I don’t think it works” → answer is the opposite |

IELTS Reading Strategy
Reading Structure (60 min, 40 questions)
- 3 passages × ~700–900 words
- Academic: scholarly texts from journals, books, newspapers
- General Training: notices, advertisements, practical texts + academic passage
Scanning Technique
Step-by-step:
- Scan title, headings, subheadings, and images (30 seconds)
- Read the question — identify the key word or concept
- Scan the passage for the keyword or a synonym
- Read carefully only the relevant sentence(s) — then answer
Question Type Strategies

True/False/Not Given: The Critical Distinction
This is the question type most test-takers find hardest:
- True: The statement agrees with the passage
- False: The statement contradicts the passage (direct opposite stated)
- Not Given: The passage says nothing about this topic at all
Trap: Don’t assume False just because you know the statement is factually wrong in the world — only the passage content matters.
Time Management
Recommended allocation (60 min):
- Passage 1 (easiest): 17 minutes
- Passage 2 (medium): 20 minutes
- Passage 3 (hardest): 23 minutes
