Chapter 11: 조동사 — 능력, 허가, 의무, 가능성

조동사(modal verb)는 화자의 태도나 심리적 관점을 나타내는 조동사입니다. 조동사 뒤에는 항상 본동사의 원형(to 없이, -s 없이)이 옵니다.

추론을 나타내는 조동사

조동사로 어떤 사실에 대한 확신의 정도를 표현할 수 있습니다:

확신 정도	현재	과거
100% 확신 (긍정)	He must be home.	He must have been home.
약 80% 확신	She should be there by now.	She should have arrived.
약 50% 가능성	It may/might be true.	It may/might have been true.
100% 확신 (부정)	That can’t be right.	That can’t have been right.

자주 하는 실수

1. 조동사 이중 사용: ❌ You might can do it. → ✅ You might be able to do it.
2. 부정형에서 must와 have to 혼동: You mustn’t do it (금지) ≠ You don’t have to do it (의무 없음)
3. 단일 과거 성취에 could 사용: ❌ I could finish it in time. → ✅ I was able to finish it in time.
